KATHMANDU, NEPAL – Police have arrested 13 individuals at Banchare Danda for obstructing the disposal of waste from Kathmandu. The arrests follow an earlier announcement by Nuwakot and Dhading residents to disrupt waste disposal efforts in the area.
Kathmandu Police spokesperson SSP Navaraj Adhikari confirmed the arrests, stating that locals had halted vehicles carrying waste this morning. Police from Balaju and Kathmandu Metropolitan Police responded to the scene. The arrested individuals are being held at the Balaju Police Circle pending further legal action.
Approximately 40 tipper trucks carrying waste are currently at Banchare Danda. Rambhakta Dhungana, coordinator of the Banchare Danda Landfill Site Affected Area Management Committee, stated that the protest stems from the government’s failure to address demands made during an all-party meeting and those previously submitted to the Prime Minister in March.
