A group of 20 medical students and a doctor were kidnapped on Thursday evening while traveling to a medical conference in Enugu, Nigeria. The students, hailing from the Universities of Maiduguri and Jos, were ambushed on a road near the town of Otukpo, a notorious hotspot for kidnappings.
The Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students confirmed the incident, while the Nigerian Medical Students Association revealed that a ransom demand had been issued. Local authorities, including the Benue State Police, have acknowledged the kidnapping and launched an investigation.
The incident highlights the escalating security crisis in Nigeria, marked by a surge in kidnappings amid the country’s economic turmoil. Since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office, there has been a dramatic increase in kidnapping cases nationwide.
