A fire ripped through a building housing workers in the southern Kuwaiti district of Mangaf early on Wednesday morning, killing at least 41 people and injuring dozens more, according to the Health Ministry.
Authorities said they have brought the fire under control and are currently investigating the cause. The building housed a large number of workers, but officials have not yet released information on their nationalities or employers.
Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Fahad al-Yousuf al-Sabah visited the site and ordered the arrest of the building’s owner. “We always alert and warn against” overcrowding worker housing, a senior police commander told state TV.
The nationalities of the casualties and the cause of the fire remain under investigation.
