The 8th edition of the prestigious Birat Gold Cup football tournament begins Thursday at Shahid Stadium in Biratnagar. The opening match will feature a clash between Nepal Police Club and Bhutan’s Royal Thimphu Football Club.
Formerly known as the Mahendra Gold Cup, the tournament has been rebranded as the Birat Gold Cup since 2068. Ten teams, including three foreign teams, will compete in the tournament, which runs until April 6th of March. This year’s champion will receive 11 lakh rupees, with the runner-up taking home 550 thousand rupees.
Reduced prize amounts compared to the previous edition are being attributed to a lack of funds, according to the Gold Cup Trust president, Kishor Shahi. This year, the Trust is directly organizing the competition.
