Bangladesh aims to boost its livestock sector by domestically producing foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccine. Fisheries and Livestock Minister Abdur Rahman announced the initiative, stating it will address vaccine shortages and offer more effective, cost-efficient solutions than current imports.
“The government has a plan to produce FMD vaccine for the livestock locally instead of importing,” the Minister stated. He highlighted that FMD remains a serious challenge for the livestock industry, with many animals going untreated due to vaccine unavailability.
The new research and manufacturing center will make the vaccine more affordable. Currently, FMD costs Bangladesh’s livestock industry an estimated 125 million U.S. dollars per year in losses.
