Bhojpuri actress Amrita Pandey, known by her stage name Annapurna, has died by suicide at the age of 27, police officials confirmed on Friday. Her body was found hanging in her apartment in the Bhagalpur Jogsar area of Bihar on Thursday afternoon.
Pandey’s tragic death has sent shockwaves through the Bhojpuri film industry and her fan base. Her last WhatsApp status, posted shortly before her demise, has gone viral – “Her life is on two boats, I made her path easier by sinking our boat.”
According to reports, Pandey had been suffering from depression and was deeply troubled by a lack of work opportunities in recent months. She had been seeking treatment but was disheartened about the prolonged career slump.
“We received the tragic news yesterday evening that Ms. Pandey had ended her life,” said police inspector Rajesh Kumar. “Her sister discovered her hanging body around 3:30 pm and she was rushed to the hospital but declared dead on arrival.”
Pandey married animation engineer Chandramani Jhangad in 2022. While an up-and-coming talent, she acted in several Hindi films, web series, and television shows including the popular Pratishodh.
Mental health advocates have urged the entertainment community to have more open conversations about depression and suicidal thoughts among artists. Pandey’s devastating passing at such a young age has reignited calls for better support systems.
