Bhutan’s women’s football team cruised into the semi-finals of the SAFF Women’s Championship after a resounding 13-0 victory over the Maldives. The dominant performance came in a Group B match played at Dasarath Rangasalal Stadium on Thursday.
Deki Lhazom stole the show, netting an impressive five goals for Bhutan. The victory propelled Bhutan to the top of Group B with 7 points from 3 matches.
The other semi-finalist from Group B will be determined by the outcome of today’s match between Nepal and Sri Lanka. Nepal, with 4 points from 2 matches, can secure a semi-final berth with a draw or a win against Sri Lanka, who have 3 points.
However, Bhutan’s massive win over the Maldives has complicated Nepal’s path to the top of the group. Nepal would need to defeat Sri Lanka by at least 6 goals to claim the Group B title. A draw or a win by a margin of less than 5 goals would see Bhutan finish first and Nepal as the runner-up.
Earlier in the tournament, Nepal and Bhutan played to a goalless draw, while Bhutan defeated Sri Lanka 4-1. Bhutan’s defensive prowess has been evident, conceding only 1 goal in 3 matches while scoring a remarkable 17. Nepal, on the other hand, has scored 11 goals in 2 matches, including an 11-0 victory over the Maldives.
