The eighth edition of the Birat Gold Cup 2024 football tournament has officially begun in Biratnagar, with the opening match taking place on March 28th. Bhutan’s Royal Thimphu FC (RTC) faced off against Nepal Police Club in a thrilling night match.

Kishor Bahadur Shahi, Chairman of the Gold Cup Trust, announced at a press conference that all preparations for the tournament have been completed. Matches will begin daily at 6:30 pm. Ten teams are vying for the grand prize of 11 lakh rupees, with the runner-up receiving 550 thousand rupees and a shield.
Group ‘A’ consists of Sangrila Morang FA (home team), Royal Thimphu FC (Bhutan), Nepal Police Club, Armed Police Force FC, and Church Boys United, winners of the Shahid Memorial ‘A’ Division League. Group ‘B’ features Sikkim Dragons (India), Southern Samiti Kolkata, Tribhuvan Army Football Club, New Road Team, and Machindra Football Club.
Formerly known as the Mahendra Gold Cup since 2018 B.S., the tournament was renamed the Birat Gold Cup in 2068 B.S. The Trust estimates the cost of this year’s tournament, running until the 24th of Chaitra, to be 1 crore 18 lakh 43 thousand rupees.
