Lumbini Chief Minister Chet Narayan Acharya will face a crucial vote of confidence today, Monday, August 20, 2024. A meeting of the Provincial Assembly has been convened at 1 PM to decide Acharya’s fate.

Acharya was appointed Chief Minister on July 22 following a new alliance between the Congress and UML. He currently enjoys the support of UML, the Civil Liberties Party, Congress, the Democratic Samajwadi Party, the Janamat Party, the JSP, and an independent MP.

However, Acharya’s position is tenuous, as the Maoist Center, RPP, CPN United Socialist Party, and Rashtriya Janamorcha have indicated that they will not vote in his favor.

The Provincial Assembly consists of 87 members, with UML holding 29 seats, Congress 27, Maoist Center 11, Civil Liberties Party 4, RPP 4, Loktantrik Samajwadi Party and Janmat Party 3 each, JSP and JSP Nepal 2 each, United Socialist Party and Jana Morcha 1 each, and 1 independent MP.

Acharya’s ability to secure a majority vote in the Provincial Assembly will determine whether he remains in power or if a new government is formed.
