In a crucial development for Madhes Province, Chief Minister Saroj Kumar Yadav is set to face a vote of confidence for the third time today. The Province Assembly has been convened for a special meeting at 2:00 pm to conduct the confidence vote, as CM Yadav navigates a challenging political landscape.
This move comes after the Janamat Party withdrew its support to the Chief Minister’s government on January 23, prompting the constitutional requirement for Yadav to seek a vote of confidence within 30 days. The previous instance was on June 13, 2023, when Yadav faced a floor test after the CPN (UML) withdrew its support on May 15, 2023.
The Chief Minister requires the backing of at least 54 members out of the total 107 members in the Province Assembly to secure victory in the vote of confidence. The assembly makeup includes 23 members from the CPN (UML), 22 from the Nepali Congress, 18 from the Janata Samajwadi Party, 13 from the Janamat Party, and nine each from the Loktantrik Samajbadi Party and the CPN (Maoist Centre). Additionally, the CPN (Unified Socialist) has seven members, while the Nepal Sanghiya Samajwadi Party, the Nagarik Unmukti Party, and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party each have one member. Three members are independents.
The current Madhes Province government, led by the Janata Samajbadi Party, also includes the Nepali Congress, the Loktantrik Samajwadi Party, the Maoist Centre, and the CPN (Unified Socialist) in the ruling coalition. With the support of 65 members from these four parties, the government aims to secure stability and legitimacy through this crucial vote of confidence. The outcome of today’s vote will significantly impact the political landscape in Madhes Province.
