A landslide triggered by heavy snow has devastated a village in eastern Afghanistan’s Nuristan province, killing at least 25 people. Eight are injured, and the death toll is expected to rise.
Rescue efforts are severely hampered by ongoing snowfall and blocked roads, preventing helicopters from landing. Rescuers on the ground are using shovels and axes to search for survivors in the rubble.
“Modern equipment is not available,” said Jamiullah Hashimi, the provincial information head. Afghanistan’s disaster management ministry confirmed the deaths and stated that up to 20 homes were destroyed.
Landslides and other natural disasters are frequent in mountainous Nuristan province.
