Dengue Outbreak

A surge in dengue cases has alarmed health officials in Far West Nepal. Since the beginning of the year, 161 people have been infected with the mosquito-borne disease, with Doti district reporting the highest number of cases.

The rainy season, from June to October, is considered a peak period for dengue transmission due to optimal breeding conditions for the Aedes aegypti mosquito. To combat this, the provincial health directorate is urging local authorities to conduct “search and destroy” campaigns targeting mosquito breeding sites.

While treatment for dengue is free in government hospitals, early detection and prevention remain crucial. Symptoms include fever, headache, joint and muscle pain, and loss of appetite. In severe cases, patients may experience internal bleeding leading to fatal consequences.

The public is advised to protect themselves from mosquito bites by using repellents and wearing long sleeves and pants. Eliminating stagnant water sources around homes and workplaces is also essential in preventing the spread of dengue.

Last year, three dengue-related deaths were reported in the region, highlighting the severity of the disease.

Health authorities are emphasizing the importance of public awareness and cooperation in controlling the dengue outbreak.
