The Federation of Nepali Journalists, the primary organization representing journalists in Nepal, has commemorated its 69th anniversary. The federation was established on March 29th, 1956, as the Nepal Journalists Association and later transformed into a federation in 1996.
Federation President, Bipul Pokhrel, extended his best wishes to the Nepali media and all advocates of free expression on this significant occasion. He emphasized the federation’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the rights of working journalists and fostering independent journalism throughout Nepal’s journey toward democracy and civil rights. President Pokhrel urged everyone to uphold the legacy forged by their predecessors and remain steadfast in achieving the federation’s goals, even in the face of obstacles.
The current media landscape presents both opportunities and challenges. President Pokhrel acknowledged a need for further progress in the creation and effective implementation of laws that fully guarantee press freedom. He reiterated the call for collaborative discussions with stakeholders on new communications legislation with the goal of fully securing the rights of the press.
To maintain its status as an organization committed to working journalists, the federation champions initiatives for membership purification, labor rights, and the ongoing pursuit of fair treatment through dialogue, advocacy, and legal advocacy where necessary.
