Five climbers, including two foreign climbers and three Nepali helpers, have died on Mount Everest during the ongoing mountaineering season, according to the Nepal Tourism Department.
The department released the information on Thursday evening, detailing the nationalities and locations of the deceased.
Confirmed Deaths:
- Two Mongolian climbers, Usukhjargal Tsedendamba and Purevsuren Lkhagvajav, died near the South Summit on May 13.
- Romanian climber Gabriel Viorel Tabara, 46, was found dead in his tent at Camp Three on May 21.
- Kenyan climber Joshua Cheruiyot Kirui, 40, passed away near the peak on May 21.
- Nepali climber Binod Babu Bastakoti died at 8200 meters near South Col on the same day.
Missing Climbers:
The department also reported three climbers and helpers missing:
- British climber Daniel Paul, 40, fell from the Hillary Step on May 21 and is missing.
- His climbing helper, Pas Tenji Sherpa, is also missing.
- Ngawang Sherpa, who was climbing with the Kenyan national, is missing near the peak.
Climbing Successes
Despite the tragic news, the department reported over 570 successful ascents of Mount Everest by climbers and helpers as of Thursday. However, the number reaching the summit on Thursday itself was only 65.
