Spanish Tourists Annapurna Trekking

Pokhara, Nepal — The serene yet challenging trails of the Annapurna region turned into the backdrop for a tragic incident as two Spanish nationals, Eric Kasanovas, and Molass Junka Missi, went missing while trekking to Ghorepani via Birethanti. The unfolding of events has left the trekking community and local authorities grappling with questions about how this tragedy could have occurred.

Eric Kasanovas and Molass Junka Missi arrived in Nepal on August 22, eager to explore the renowned trekking routes of the Annapurna region. On August 25th, they set off for Ghorepani, a popular stop for trekkers aiming to witness the stunning views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. The pair registered their names at the Birethanti Checkpost of the Annapurna Conservation Project at 10:21 AM, marking the official start of their trek.

The last confirmed sighting of the duo was at the Birethanti Checkpost. As they progressed on their journey, they would have passed through Tikhedhunga, a village located in Ward No. 9 of the Annapurna Rural Municipality, known for its proximity to the Mauja River. This area, though picturesque, is also characterized by rugged terrain and swiftly flowing waters, especially during the monsoon season.

It was near this river that their belongings were first discovered by locals. Rucksack bags, mobile phones, hats, t-shirts, and other trekking materials were found abandoned, a sight that immediately raised alarms. The discovery was reported to Ward Chairman Ramesh Gurung, who quickly notified the police station in Birethanti.

Kaski Police Chief, SP Mohan Thapa, provided a theory that sheds light on the possible circumstances leading to their disappearance. On the day they went missing, the weather was particularly hot, which might have tempted the trekkers to take a refreshing dip in the Mauja River. However, what began as a moment of respite could have quickly turned perilous.

The rivers in the Annapurna region, especially during the monsoon season, are known for their strong currents and unpredictable water levels. If Eric and Molass did indeed enter the water, they may have been swept away by the swift current, a scenario that tragically aligns with the discovery of Eric’s body approximately one and a half kilometers downstream from where their belongings were found.

Following the report of their disappearance, a coordinated search operation was launched by local authorities, villagers, and police. Village Chairman Bishnu KC, who has been at the forefront of the search efforts, confirmed the discovery of one body downstream identified as Erik Kasanovas.

The search continues for Molass Junka Missi, with teams scouring the area in hopes of locating her. The discovery of the body has intensified efforts, with preparations underway to bring the body to the Pokhara Institute of Health Sciences for a post-mortem examination.
