Japan’s Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa is embarking on a significant diplomatic journey that includes a visit to Nepal. According to an announcement from Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on April 26, Kamikawa is slated to touch down in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, on May 5.

Before her Nepal visit, Kamikawa will make a stopover in Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo, on May 4, as part of her broader diplomatic itinerary. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs detailed her scheduled engagements during her stay in Kathmandu, highlighting a pivotal meeting with Nepal’s Foreign Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha. The agenda for their discussion encompasses commemorating the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Nepal and Japan, as well as exploring avenues for bolstering bilateral relations and facilitating Nepal’s development.

Following her meeting in Kathmandu, Kamikawa will promptly return to Tokyo on the same day, under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs directives. Her comprehensive tour, spanning from April 26 to May 5, includes visits to Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Cote d’Ivoire, Nigeria, and France, signifying the breadth of Japan’s diplomatic engagements.

This visit marks a significant milestone in bilateral relations, as it represents the highest level of diplomatic engagement between Japan and Nepal since Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori’s visit in 2000. Notably, the last ministerial visit from Japan occurred in 2019, underscoring the importance of Kamikawa’s forthcoming trip in strengthening ties between the two nations.
