Not everything is happy on Boxing Day. There is also controversy. For John Durán, for example, a ‘poisoned’ gift awaited him.

Aston Villa’s ‘9’, one of the revelations of this Premier League, saw a straight red card in the 32nd minute in a somewhat confusing incident.

Durán was fighting for the ball with Fabian Schär when – it seemed – that he lost his balance and, in his attempt to stay upright, he ended up stepping on the former Deportivo player’s back.

It may have seemed like an ‘accident’, but Anthony Taylor did not consider it that way, and he did not hesitate to expel him. Casual or premeditated? You judge. The fact is that Durán left Unai Emery’s team with 10 who, at that time, were losing 1-0 because of Anthony Gordon’s great goal.
