KATHMANDU, NEPAL – A recent study has revealed a concerning trend within the Kathmandu metropolis, with 110 cases of leprosy recorded during the fiscal year 2079-80 BS (2022-23). The study was conducted by the Leprosy Control and Disabilities Management Section under the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division of the Department of Health Services, with support from government and non-government organizations.

In response to this finding, the NGO NLR Nepal has launched an awareness program on leprosy, working with local representatives, health workers, and volunteers. The program aims to educate the community about this infectious disease, the risks of physical impairment if untreated, and the availability of effective treatment options.

Bikashman Singh, Executive Director of NLR Nepal, stressed the crucial need for early detection and treatment, emphasizing, “Leprosy is preventable through medication.” He noted that leprosy, caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae, is transmitted primarily through respiratory routes, but is generally considered less communicable.
