Torrential rains have triggered a spate of landslides and floods in Vietnam’s northern mountainous region, resulting in the deaths of nine people and injuries to seven others.
The devastation caused by the incessant downpours, which began on August 1, has been significant. Over 121 houses have been damaged, with 10 requiring immediate relocation. Additionally, 170 locations have reported erosion, leading to traffic disruptions.
The Vietnamese government has warned that heavy rainfall is expected to continue until August 17, raising concerns about further potential damage. The country has a history of grappling with natural disasters, with this year’s toll already surpassing previous records. As of August 5, 111 fatalities and numerous missing persons had been reported, marking the highest number of casualties in five years for the same period.
