Google has granted the reins to the Linux Foundation of a new initiative that would promote web browsers based on Chromium. For those who are not aware, Chromium is an open source web browser project created by Google from which many browsers derive, including Chrome, Opera GX, Brave and Microsoft Edge. Being open source, any developer can contribute to the project or use their code to create their own browser.
“Since Google announced the Chromium project in 2008, we have been excited to build on the great foundations of open source web browsers and contribute to the continuous development of an enriched web platform,” explains the company.
“At present, Chromium is used in hundreds of different projects around the world, including large browsers such as Chrome, domestic electronic devices of LG, applications frames such as Electron and even personalized applications such as Bloomberg terminals and SPACEX capsule control software ”.
Google is currently the largest contributor and main administrator of the project, but the company has decided to give part of this responsibility to the Linux Foundation, current administrators of the GNU/Linux Operating Systems Foundation.
“Google is pleased to announce today its association with the Linux Foundation and the launch of the Supporters of Chromium-Browsers initiative (Chromium-based browse supporters),” explains Google’s official statement.
“The objective of this initiative is to promote a sustainable environment of open source contributions for the chromium ecosystem and financially support a community of developers who want to contribute to the project, promoting generalized support and continuous technological progress for browsers based on Chromium ”.
According to the statement, Google considered the Linux Foundation as the appropriate company to handle this initiative because “they value transparency, inclusion and community work.” Microsoft, Opera and Meta have already joined in support of this initiative and the other chromium -based browse creators are expected to soon pronounce on these developments.
