Machhindra FC etched their name in history by claiming the eighth edition of the Birat Gold Cup in a thrilling final against home team Shangrila Morang FA on Saturday night. After a scoreless 90 minutes at Shaheed Ground in Biratnagar, Machhindra secured a 2-0 victory in extra time.
Chhiring Gurung and Yusup Thapaliya delivered the decisive goals in extra time, securing the coveted title and a cash prize of 11 lakh rupees for Machhindra. Shangrila, as runners-up, received 500,000 rupees.
This victory marks a historic achievement for Machhindra, who have now won three of the seven gold cups they participated in this season. Their previous triumphs include the KP Oli Cup and Bagmati Gold Cup.
Laken Limbu of Machhindra was named player of the match, receiving 11 thousand rupees. Bishal Shrestha, Santosh Neupane, and Stephen (all from Machhindra) shared the best goalkeeper award and a prize of 21 thousand rupees each. Shangrila’s Mahendra Karki was honored as the best player, receiving a motorcycle.
Koshi Chief Minister Kedar Karki, President of All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) Pankaj Bikram Nemhang, and President of Birat Gold Cup Trust Kishor Shahi presented the prizes to the triumphant team.
