Tottenham Hotspur’s James Maddison has been cut from Gareth Southgate’s final squad for the upcoming European Championship in Germany.
The 27-year-old midfielder was included in Southgate’s initial 33-man selection but failed to secure a spot in the final 26-player squad. With the deadline to finalize the team looming on June 7th, just a week before the tournament opener, Southgate has opted to leave Maddison behind.
Maddison did see some action in England’s recent friendly win against Bosnia and Herzegovina, playing for 30 minutes in a comfortable 3-0 victory. This omission comes despite his inclusion in the final squad for the 2022 World Cup, where he ultimately didn’t feature on the field.
Maddison earned his first England start in March 2023 during a Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine and has collected a total of seven caps for his country. However, his performances haven’t been enough to convince Southgate of his place in the Euros squad.
