Manila, Philippines: A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 rocked Surigao del Sur province in the southern Philippines on Saturday morning. The tremor, which struck at 6:22 AM local time, had a depth of 9 kilometers and was centered about 66 kilometers northeast of Lingig.
The quake was felt across several provinces in the Mindanao region, including Agusan del Sur, Davao de Oro, Davao City, and Davao Occidental. There were even reports of the tremor being felt in some parts of the central Philippines.
While the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has assured the public that no damage is expected and that the earthquake is unlikely to trigger destructive aftershocks, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the country’s vulnerability to seismic activity due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire.
