A tsunami warning has been issued for Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures in Japan following a magnitude 7 earthquake that struck the southwestern region of the country.
The epicenter of the quake was located in Miyazaki prefecture. While there are currently no reports of damage, authorities are urging residents in the affected areas to evacuate to higher ground.
Japan has a history of devastating earthquakes, with a magnitude 7.6 quake in Ishikawa prefecture causing at least 48 deaths in January of this year. It’s important to note that Japan uses a different seismic intensity scale, measuring ground vibrations from one to seven, rather than the magnitude scale commonly used elsewhere.
