KATHMANDU – Maha Shivaratri, the auspicious festival dedicated to Lord Shiva, is being observed with great reverence throughout Nepal today. Hindu devotees are flocking to Shiva temples across the country to offer prayers and perform special poojas.
Since the early hours of the morning, a massive gathering of devotees has formed at the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu. To manage the crowds, all four temple entrances have remained open since 3 am. Devotees patiently wait in long queues to offer their worship on this significant day.
Pashupatinath Temple has also welcomed numerous sadhus (holy ascetics) from Nepal and India. The Pashupati Area Development Trust (PADT) extends support to the sadhus by providing them with money and alms.
The festival of Mahashivaratri, which falls on the day of Krishna Chaturdashi, sees devotees gather at various “Shivalayas” or temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Notable sites like Haleshi and Devghat are also experiencing a surge of worshippers paying respect to Lord Shiva.
Enhanced Security for Devotees
To ensure a peaceful and safe Mahashivaratri celebration, Nepal Police has deployed around 3,072 security personnel strategically around the Pashupatinath Temple. Dinesh Raj Mainali, spokesperson for Kathmandu Valley Police Office, explained, “The police are utilizing modern methods of surveillance like drones, CCTV, and mobile patrols starting from Thursday until March 9.”
These comprehensive measures aim to prevent any potential security issues. Along with the increased security presence, an ambulance and medical personnel will be on standby to handle any emergencies during the celebrations.
The PADT has put in place special arrangements to ensure that devotees have a smooth and positive experience while visiting the Pashupatinath Temple on this important occasion.
