Rashee Rice, the Kansas City Chiefs receiver, could have said goodbye to the season. In the absence of medical evidence, the hard blow he received from his teammate Patrick Mahomes would have resulted in a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Rice left the field on a stretcher after the hard hit received when Mahomes hit his knee while trying to tackle Kristian Fulton after an interception.
Rice, a second-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft, is the Chiefs’ leading receiver this season. He entered Sunday’s game, against the Los Angeles Chargers, with 24 receptions for 288 yards and two touchdowns, the only Kansas City receiver with more than 10 receptions or 100 yards in three games.
“I was trying to pass it to Travis (Kelce). I threw it a little bit over his body. I lost the ball. Then I was trying to tackle him [a Kristian Fulton] and obviously I got over it, but if I don’t turn the ball over, that never happens,” Mahomes said.
“I feel terrible for Rashee. The injury doesn’t look good. I’m sure he’s not as good as we want,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said after the game.
In April, Rice made headlines when he was involved in a traffic accident in Dallas. He fled and turned himself in a few days later when an arrest warrant had been issued. His case is still ongoing and, once there is a judicial resolution, he could be affected by a sports sanction by the NFL.
