Tripura, India: A horrifying incident has rocked Tripura as a man brutally murdered his wife and mother-in-law over a social media post. The accused, Samarjit Chowdhury, a 51-year-old poultry farm owner, was arrested on Sunday after carrying out the double murder in Hapania, on the outskirts of Agartala.
According to police reports, the incident stemmed from a disagreement over photographs Tanushree Acherjee, Chowdhury’s wife, had posted on Facebook while attending Durga Puja celebrations. The images showed her with two male friends, sparking a furious reaction from her estranged husband.
Chowdhury, who had been living separately from his wife for over a year following her filing for divorce, stormed into her parents’ home in Hapania. Armed with a sharp-edged weapon, he attacked both Tanushree and her mother, Soma Acherjee, killing them instantly.
The horrific crime has sent shockwaves through the state, which was still celebrating the five-day-long Durga Puja festival. Police have launched an investigation into the matter and are seeking custody of the accused.
