The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Council has announced that Mark Rutte, the current Dutch prime minister, will be the new NATO secretary general. Rutte will replace Jens Stoltenberg, who has served as the Alliance’s leader for the past ten years. Rutte is set to assume the position on October 1.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Stoltenberg expressed his support for Rutte: “Mark is a true transatlanticist, a strong leader and a consensus-builder. I wish him every success as we continue to strengthen NATO. I know I am leaving NATO in good hands.”

Rutte’s appointment comes as NATO continues to address various global security challenges and aims to maintain strong transatlantic relations. As the new secretary general, Rutte will be responsible for guiding the Alliance through its ongoing efforts to ensure collective defense and cooperation among member states.
