Thame River in Khumbu

A sudden and severe flood in the Thame River, a tributary of the Dudhkoshi, wreaked havoc on Thame village in Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality, Ward 5, on Friday afternoon.

Residents reported days of rainfall preceding the disaster, but the magnitude of the flood came as a shock. Many suspect a possible glacier burst in the upper reaches as the cause.

Chief District Officer Devi Pandey confirmed the incident but clarified that the exact cause, whether an avalanche or glacier burst, is yet to be determined. Pasang Gyalzen Sherpa, the ward president, described the village as inundated by the floodwaters, affecting all 45 households.

Due to the remote location, it will take approximately four days to reach Thame from the district headquarters. While there are no confirmed reports of casualties yet, the full extent of the damage remains unknown.

Rescue and assessment teams are likely to be deployed as soon as possible.
