Meta platforms will implement radical changes to their moderation systems, replacing their team of fact checkers with a community content verification system.

“It’s time to return to our roots around freedom of expression,” declared Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and founder of the company, through a video on his personal Facebook account. “We will replace fact checkers with community notes, simplify our policies and focus on reducing errors. We look forward to the next chapter.”

The new functionality is almost identical to the community notes system that has become synonymous with clarifications to popular messages with the intention of limiting the spread of misinformation.

Zuckerberg admits to having been “inspired” by Elon Musk’s platform and the effectiveness and popularity of these moderation systems, which is why they have decided to completely eliminate their information verification division and leave these functions in the hands of users.

“We’ve built a lot of complex systems to moderate content,” Zuckerberg explains. “But the problem with complex systems is that they make mistakes. Even if they accidentally censor one percent of messages, that’s millions of people. “We have reached a point where there are too many mistakes and too much censorship.”

They added that, in addition to these changes to network moderation, the platforms will eliminate restrictions on certain controversial topics such as discussions about immigration and gender ideology, which were the target of multiple limitations due to their controversial nature. Mark Zuckerberg assures that these changes will create a much more inclusive community, one that is much more open to dialogue and discussion.
