At least 14 people were killed and several others remain missing after a stone quarry collapsed in Mizoram’s Aizawl district on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred around 6 am in the Melthum-Hlimen area on the southern outskirts of Aizawl, following heavy rains triggered by Cyclone Remal.
The collapse caused damage to nearby houses. Rescue efforts are underway, hampered by the ongoing rain. According to reports from news agency PTI, authorities have recovered the bodies of the deceased. However, search operations continue for those still trapped under the debris.
Officials say three of the confirmed fatalities are non-Mizos. A child rescued from the collapse received medical attention at a nearby hospital. Rescue workers fear several more workers, reportedly all non-tribals, might not survive.
Heavy rainfall across the state has caused landslides in multiple locations. Aizawl is now cut off from the rest of the country due to a landslide on National Highway 6 near Hunthar. Local authorities report disruptions on various other intra-state highways as well.
Schools across Mizoram are closed due to the weather, and non-essential government employees have been asked to work from home.
