The vote counting for India’s 18th Lok Sabha elections has concluded. According to the Election Commission, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured 293 seats, while the Congress-led opposition alliance, India, won 231 seats.
The BJP alone fell short of a majority, winning 240 seats, compared to 303 seats in 2019. Conversely, Congress improved from 52 seats in 2019 to 99 seats. The Samajwadi Party (SP) won 37 seats, and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) won 29 seats.
Despite needing 272 seats for a majority, no single party achieved this. However, as the largest party, the BJP will form a coalition government under its leadership. BJP leader Narendra Modi will head the government.
Modi Equals Nehru
Having led the government from 2014 to 2019 and from 2019 to 2024, Modi will now serve a third term. BJP President JP Nadda confirmed, “Narendra Modi will become the Prime Minister for the third time. The people have blessed Narendra Modi in 2024.”
Modi is now the second leader in India to serve as Prime Minister for three consecutive terms, a record previously held by Jawaharlal Nehru.
Modi’s Message of Resolve
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed gratitude to the people for their support. On social media platform X, he wrote, “The people of the country have expressed their faith in the NDA for the third time in a row. This is an unprecedented moment in the history of India. I assure the countrymen that we will move forward with new energy, new enthusiasm, and new resolve to fulfill their aspirations.”
Modi has also secured his election win from Varanasi.
