Nepal is bracing for heavy rainfall over the next three nights as monsoon activity picks up pace. Meteorologists warn of the potential for extremely heavy downpours in certain regions.
According to Sanjiv Adhikari of the Department of Water and Meteorology, the monsoon is expected to be more active in the coming days compared to the recent past.
“We anticipate heavy rainfall tonight, tomorrow, and the night after,” he stated.
Nighttime downpours are a common characteristic of the monsoon season, explained Adhikari. This phenomenon is attributed to the higher water-holding capacity of warm air from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. As temperatures drop at night, the air’s capacity decreases, leading to precipitation.
Heavy Rain Warning
The Meteorological Forecasting Division has issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Sudurpaschim provinces tonight. This pattern is expected to continue on Monday and Tuesday nights, with additional provinces, including Madhesh and Lumbini, potentially affected.
The monsoon low-pressure system is currently situated near regular places, and its influence is expected to increase in the coming days. In the past 24 hours, significant rainfall has been recorded in Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, with Sindhupalchok and Lamjung districts experiencing exceptionally heavy downpours.
The department urges the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent potential hazards of heavy rainfall, such as landslides, floods, and inundation.
