Mumbai, India – The Mumbai Indians’ season came to a close on a disappointing note as they fell short against the Lucknow Super Giants in their final Indian Premier League (IPL) match on Friday night.
Playing at their home ground, the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai chased a challenging target of 215 runs set by Lucknow. Despite valiant efforts from openers Rohit Sharma (68 runs) and Naman Dhir (62 runs), they could only manage 196 runs for the loss of 6 wickets.
Other Mumbai batsmen like Dewald Brevis (23 runs), Hardik Pandya (16 runs), and Ishan Kishan (14 runs) failed to capitalize, leaving the team with a deficit. Lucknow’s bowling attack, led by Naveen-ul-Haq and Ravi Bishnoi with two wickets each, kept the pressure on throughout the innings.
Earlier, Lucknow posted a strong total of 214 runs on the board, losing just 6 wickets. Nicholas Pooran’s explosive knock of 75 runs off just 29 balls was the highlight, ably supported by skipper KL Rahul’s 55 runs. Contributions from Marcus Stoinis (28 runs) and Ayush Badoni (22 runs) further bolstered their score.
Mumbai’s bowling attack, with Nuwan Thushara and Piyush Chawla picking up three wickets each, tried their best to restrict the flow of runs. However, Lucknow’s batting prowess proved too much to handle in the end.
With this defeat, Mumbai finishes the season at the bottom of the points table, officially eliminated from the playoffs. Lucknow, on the other hand, remains in contention for a spot in the next round, currently holding the sixth position.
