KATHMANDU – The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has achieved a significant boost for the nation’s economy, exporting electricity worth a total of 15 billion rupees (approximately USD 120 million) in the last year. This figure was stated by Prawal Adhikari, former deputy executive director of the NEA, for the period of January 15, 2023, to November 17, 2023.

During this time, an impressive 175 billion units of electricity were sold, with noteworthy success in exporting to India even during traditionally lower-demand rainy and winter seasons.

Adhikari highlighted the importance of further increasing electricity exports, advocating for the NEA to strategically sell even more electricity in the future. He believes this will generate greater profits and significantly bolster Nepal’s economic development.

“According to the most recent data, we have sold about Rs 15 billion worth of electricity until March 23,” Adhikari explained. This ongoing success is driven by the NEA’s decision to export surplus electricity that cannot be fully consumed within the country.
