Electricity Trade Deal

Nepal is on the brink of exporting electricity to Bangladesh as the three nations prepare to finalize a crucial agreement on July 28. According to Nabin Singh, spokesperson for the Ministry of Energy, Water Resource and Irrigation, energy ministers from Nepal, India, and Bangladesh will convene to iron out the final details of the electricity trade deal.

Nepal and Bangladesh have already inked an agreement paving the way for electricity import by the latter. The upcoming meeting aims to solidify the framework for Nepal to utilize Indian transmission lines to facilitate the export.

Once the deal is sealed, Bangladesh will procure 40 megawatts of electricity from Nepal during the monsoon season for a six-month period. Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Executive Director Kulman Ghising expressed confidence that the export can commence this year as all necessary procedures have been completed.

The agreement stipulates Nepal’s annual electricity export of 40 megawatts from June 15 to November 15 for the next five years. NEA anticipates earning 6.40 cents per unit from this venture.

This development marks a significant milestone for Nepal’s hydropower sector and its journey towards becoming a regional energy hub.
