Erika Gurung, the historic medalist at the 19th Asian Games, and fellow Asiad competitor Biplav Lal Shrestha are set to represent Nepal at the USA Open International Karate Tournament. The competition will be held in Texas, USA, from March 26th to 31st.
Gurung will compete in the women’s 68 kg weight group, while Shrestha will participate in the men’s 84 kg category. Gurung made history at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, by becoming the first Nepali karateka to win a silver medal. She also holds the gold medal from the 10th World Shitoryu Karatedo International in Indonesia. Shrestha is a 13th South Asian Games gold medalist.
Deepak Shrestha and Kushal Shrestha will coach the Nepalese team. The players (excluding Kushal) will depart for the USA on Monday, with Kushal following on Tuesday.
National Sports Council Member-Secretary Tanklal Ghising offered a farewell to the team on Monday, wishing them success and encouraging them to strive for even greater achievements in this upcoming competition.
