A newlywed woman, Rina Devi Ray, has died under mysterious circumstances in Jaleshwor Municipality-8, Ramaul, Mahottari. Her family alleges that she was murdered by her in-laws, including her husband Rohan Kumar Raut, for dowry.
Rina, a 20-year-old from Sonigama in Dhanusha, married Rohan on May 1st last year. According to her father, Nawal, the family spent a significant amount on dowry, including cash, jewelry, and household items.
Despite a seemingly happy marriage initially, Rina’s family claims that she had been subjected to physical and emotional abuse by her in-laws, demanding additional dowry. On Tuesday, Rina’s parents visited her at her in-laws’ home, where they noticed that she appeared distressed.
Rina tragically died on Tuesday afternoon at her in-laws’ residence. Her body was found on the balcony with visible injuries, including blood flowing from her mouth and a lump on her neck.
While the husband claims that Rina fell ill after dinner and died despite medical intervention, the family alleges foul play. They believe Rina was murdered as part of a well-planned scheme to extort more dowry.
The police have arrested the husband and are investigating the case. A post-mortem examination will determine the exact cause of death. The family has filed a complaint against four members of the in-laws’ family, accusing them of negligence and murder.
This tragic incident highlights the ongoing issue of dowry-related violence in Nepal. Addressing this social problem and taking measures to protect women’s rights and prevent such tragedies is crucial.
