“We may be the worst team in the history of Manchester United, we have to admit it,” Rúben Amorim pointed out with some sarcasm after losing at Old Trafford with Brighton (1-3).

He is somewhat right. Those of us who grew up watching United lose their titles now see how they collect defeats with the same ease, one after another. The worst thing is the feeling of helplessness and orphanhood that remains.

Manchester’s Portuguese coach was sincere after losing to Brighton

Not even Guardiola, as the great Andrés Weiss suggests, would lift the current Manchester United. Where he says Guardiola, I invite you to put the name that most stimulates you: Ancelotti, Klopp, Simeone, Zidane, Luis Enrique, Conte… Not even Ferguson!!!

Don’t try it. They have already tried everything. Moyes, Giggs, Van Gaal, Mourinho, Carrick, Ragnick, Ten Hag, Van Nistelrooy, Amorim… It won’t be for players either. United has spent, since Ferguson’s departure in 2013, (almost) three times more (2,000 million euros) than ‘Sir Alex’ spent in his 27 years on the Old Trafford bench (791). Only Chelsea (2,680) and PSG (2,030,000) have invested more. Yes, it is not a typo, they have squandered more millions than City and Liverpool.

The Portuguese coach, only 38 years old, will be in the next round of the Europa League after eliminating Arsenal.

Paul Pogba (105 million), Antony (95), Maguire (87), Sancho (85), Lukaku (84.7), Di María (75), Hojlund ( 73.9), Casemiro (70.6), Bruno Fernandes (65), Mount (64.2)…

The management of the club has also changed – the Glazers have handed over control of operations to INEOS – and it hasn’t worked either. At least, for now. They have even ‘stolen’ Omar Berrada from City. It doesn’t matter. There is no solid foundation to build on. There are more names on the exit ramp than on the arrival ramp.

No matter how much it lurches, there is a structural problem and one thing that the current Manchester United will not be able to buy: the winning gene that Ferguson instilled in his teams. Sometimes they weren’t the best, but they were (almost) always the ones who competed the best. There is no Cantona, no Roy Keane, no Rio Ferdinand, no ’92 generation’… It hurts to say it, but there’s nothing we can do. Whoever comes! God save United.
