BANCHAREDANDA, NEPAL – Residents of Nuwakot and Dhading have launched a protest against the continued use of the Bancharedanda landfill site, halting the disposal of waste from the Kathmandu Valley. The move comes in response to unfulfilled agreements and a lack of progress on addressing the concerns of those living near the landfill.
The Bancharedanda Landfill Site-affected Area Concern Committee (Nuwakot-Dhading) is leading the protest, demanding that past agreements be implemented and the landfill area be declared a ‘Human Settlement-free Landfill Site Development Area.’
“We are taking a stand with a peaceful movement,” said Shreeram Dhungana, convenor of the committee. “We have been ignored despite submitting our 11-point demands to the Prime Minister on March 4th. There will be no waste disposal at Sisdol and Bancharedanda until our demands are met.”
The protest includes blocking access roads to Kudulle in Sisdol, Nuwakot, and Bancharedanda in Dhading since this morning. The Bancharedanda landfill site processes around 1,500 metric tonnes of waste each day from Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and other municipalities.
