Prime Minister KP Oli will seek a vote of confidence on Sunday, as announced by Mahesh Bartaula, the chief whip of the ruling party. The decision for Oli to take the vote of confidence in the House of Representatives on July 21 was confirmed by Bartaula.
“Constitutionally, after a Prime Minister’s appointment, there is a provision to secure a vote of confidence within 30 days. However, we are aiming to take the vote within a few days so the Prime Minister can quickly gain the Parliament’s confidence and proceed with his work,” stated Bartaula.
Oli, who assumed office after replacing the Prachanda-led government, has the backing of the Congress party. Political discussions are ongoing about whether Oli, who became Prime Minister under Article 76.2 of the Constitution, might encounter challenges and then have to invoke Article 76.3, potentially positioning Congress as the leading party. The UML has indicated that Oli wishes to secure the vote of confidence promptly to ease his governance, dismissing these debates.
Additionally, the UML has appointed Mahesh Bartaula as the chief whip of the ruling party. Prime Minister Oli entrusted Bartaula with this responsibility by handing over the appointment letter on Wednesday. Bartaula will now serve as the chief whip for Congress, JSP, and UML in Parliament.
