Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, also known as Prachanda, has been relieved of his position after the House of Representatives rejected his proposal for a vote of confidence. The majority of the House voted against him following the UML’s withdrawal of support.
According to Article 100 (2) of the Constitution, Prime Minister Prachanda sought a vote of confidence, needing 138 votes in the 275-member House of Representatives to maintain his position. However, he only secured 63 votes in his favor, while 194 votes were cast against him, and 1 member abstained from voting.
Prachanda assumed office as Prime Minister on December 25, 2022. During his first vote of confidence on December 26, he received overwhelming support, with 268 votes in favor and just 2 against him.
This time, however, the Congress and UML formed an agreement to establish a new government, resulting in Prachanda’s fall into the minority. The smaller parties also did not extend their support. Only the Rastriya Swatantra Party and the United Socialists, along with Prachanda’s own Maoist party, voted in his favor.
