Polio Virus Kathmandu Sewage

Kathmandu: A resurgence of polio has been confirmed in Kathmandu after the detection of the polio virus in sewage samples collected near the Tukucha-Bagamati confluence. While no human cases have been reported, health officials are alarmed by the discovery, as Nepal was declared polio-free in 2014.

To address this issue, the government is launching a renewed polio vaccination campaign targeting children under five. The drive will take place from 24 July to 27 July in the Kathmandu Valley.

Experts emphasize the importance of proper sanitation and hygiene to prevent the spread of polio, especially in young children. While the oral polio vaccine has been effective, concerns remain about its potential to cause the virus to mutate.

The government is closely monitoring the situation and has called for increased vigilance to prevent an outbreak.
