Schools in Ratnanagar municipality, Chitwan district, have been granted an unexpected summer break due to a significant rise in temperatures.
The scorching heat, reaching highs of 39 degrees Celsius, coupled with the loo (strong, hot winds), has prompted the municipality to prioritize the well-being of students. To safeguard their health and ensure a conducive learning environment, all community and institutional schools within the city will be closed for four days, from May 27th to May 31st.
The extreme heat has also impacted other public health initiatives. The municipality has postponed the ongoing Inactivated Poliovirus Vaccine (IPV) vaccination campaign, originally scheduled from May 26th to May 31st across community schools, health institutions, and all wards.
Narayan Prasad Wagle, Acting Chief Administrative Officer and City Education Officer, confirmed the postponement, citing concerns about the heat’s potential health risks during vaccinations. The campaign will resume on June 2nd.
These measures prioritize the health and safety of both students and the public during this period of intense heat.
