Lalitpur: The annual chariot procession of Rato Machindranath Jatra, revered as the god of the age, commences today from Lagankhel Thatitol to Jawalakhel. The iconic Bhoto Jatra will be celebrated four days after the chariot reaches its destination.

This year’s procession will feature the historic Khadga, a sword belonging to the 7th-century Lalitpur King Siddhinar Singh. Additionally, the living Goddess Kumari of Patan will be brought to Kumaripati for the Jatra.

The chariot will carry a replica of the Machindranath temple, which was destroyed in the 2015 earthquake.

According to legend, King Narendradev of Bhaktapur, Tantrik Bandhudatta Achaju of Kantipur, and Jaipu Rathbhakta of Lalitpur brought Machindranath from Kamrup Kamakhya in Assam, India, to end a 12-year famine.
