Nepal has seen an increase in COVID-19 cases over the past week, with medical professionals reporting a surge in patients with flu-like symptoms. The Ministry of Health and Population confirmed 28 new cases, all in individuals who recently returned from India in the Sudurpaschim Province.
The rise in cases is linked to the JN.1 Coronavirus variant, first discovered in India. “Since the detection of the new variant in India, we have seen a rise in COVID-19 cases in Nepal,” stated Dr. Prakash Budhathoki, Ministry spokesperson.
Vulnerable populations, including the unvaccinated, chronically ill, and elderly are at the highest risk. Dr. Budhathoki urges the public to take precautions.
Teku-based Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Diseases Hospital has seen an influx of COVID-19 patients. Dr. Yuwanidhi Basaula, the hospital’s Director, confirmed the rise in cases and noted that five patients are currently receiving treatment, three in the ICU.
