Indian cricket witnessed a historic double on Saturday. The team clinched the T20 World Cup title, and captain Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from T20 internationals at the post-match press conference.
During the media address, Sharma declared, “This was my last game as well.” He expressed his delight at the victory, stating, “I’ve enjoyed every moment of this. This is what I wanted – I wanted India to win the World Cup.” This win marks the culmination of India’s undefeated run in the tournament, defeating South Africa by 7 runs in the final.
While retiring from T20Is, Sharma will continue playing Test and ODI cricket for India. His leadership was instrumental in bringing the World Cup back to India after 17 years.
Adding to the night’s significance, star batsman Virat Kohli also announced his retirement from T20 internationals. Kohli played a pivotal role in the final, scoring a brilliant 76 runs off 59 balls and being named the Player of the Match. He stated, “This was my last T20 World Cup. This is what we wanted to achieve… I played the last Twenty20 match for India.”
India celebrates not just their World Cup triumph but also the farewell of two legendary figures in T20 cricket. While Sharma and Kohli move on from the format, their contributions and leadership will remain etched in cricketing history.
