Schools in Birendranagar, Nepal will be closed starting Sunday, June 2nd due to extreme heat, according to officials.

The decision was made by the Private School umbrella organization, Pabson, citing concerns about the health of students amidst scorching temperatures. Today, Birendranagar sweltered in 40-degree Celsius heat.

“We are closing schools to prioritize the well-being of our children during this extreme heat,” said Bed Prakash Dhakal, president of Pabson Surkhet.

Community schools in the city will also be closed, confirmed Birendranagar Municipality Education Branch Head Dhirendra Sharma Lamsal.

“The closure is subject to change depending on the weather,” Lamsal said. “If the temperature cools down due to rain, schools will reopen. However, if the heat persists, the closure may be extended.”
