A tragic incident unfolded in Jhapa district on Friday night, resulting in the death of a daughter and critical injuries to her mother after the latter attempted self-immolation.
Police Inspector Dundiraj Giri of the District Police Office, Jhapa, reported that Maya Ramtel, a 28-year-old resident of Gopaldandi in Buddha Shanti rural municipality-2, tried to set herself and her daughter on fire using petrol. During the attempt, Maya had tied her daughter to herself with a shawl, causing critical injuries to both.
The mother and daughter were promptly taken to B and C Hospital, where the daughter sadly succumbed to her injuries this morning. Inspector Giri disclosed that Maya sustained severe burns on most parts of her body and remains in critical condition.
Upon further investigation, a suicide note was discovered near the incident site, in which Maya cited her husband’s extramarital affair as the reason for her drastic action.
Rajan BK, Maya’s husband, has been arrested by the police, who have initiated an investigation into the case. According to police reports, the incident occurred while Maya’s husband was away from home.
