Sonam Lhosar

The Tamang community across Nepal celebrates Sonam Lhosar today, welcoming a new year with vibrant cultural programs. According to the Manjushree calendar, this marks the beginning of the 2860th year, with the Year of the Tiger succeeding the Year of the Cow.

Sonam Lhosar, observed annually on the auspicious date of Magh Shukla Pratipada, is a time of joyful celebration. The festival follows a 12-year cycle represented by animals; other symbols include the rat, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, bird, dog, and pig. This year’s celebrations hold special significance for those born under the sign of the Tiger.

Tamang communities nationwide, particularly in districts of the Bagmati region, enthusiastically mark the festival. To honor this important cultural event, the government of Nepal has declared a nationwide public holiday for Saturday.
